Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.

On Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in front of the Mt. Olivet Chapel, a Sesquicentennial celebration of the purchase of the Mt. Olivet Cemetery by St. James Episcopal Church will be conducted.

In conjunction with this event, Bishop Bruce MacPherson will be dedicating the Mt. Olivet Chapel and Cemetery National Register of Historic Places marker.  This designation is the federal government's official list of historic properties worthy of preservation.

On March 8, 1858 the vestry minutes record that "On motion resolved that the Rector, Rev. Caleb Dowe, be, and he is hereby authorized to purchase from John P. Davidson & Joseph H. Maddox, for the price and sum of Seven Hundred Dollars, the following property to wit: the same being for the use and benefit of St. James Church in the Parish of Rapides.  This property was already serving as a cemetery with the oldest marker dated 1824.  The property was described as being in the village of Pineville, being part of a tract of land known as "Kingston" and was one arpent (approx. 192 feet) fronting the Public Road by two arpents (approx. 384 feet) in depth."
