The Hotel Bentley, completed in 1908, is Joseph A. Bentley's gift to the city of Alexandria.  At this time, the Hotel Bentley IS Alexandria.  It examples all of the best elements of the indomitable spirit of the Alexandrians who, following the Civil War, rebuilt the city of Alexandria.  The Hotel Bentley sets forth the aesthetic beauty of who Alexandrians are as a people and the pride that we innately feel about our city.  As President of the Historical Association, I have often said, "We are better people here in Alexandria than is represented by our downtown."  I feel that way passionately and the entire Historical Association possesses this common opinion and passion concerning the great need for downtown revitalization.
